Sleep hygiene

Lifestyle Trainers

From Better Health Channel:

'Sleep hygiene' means habits that help you have a good night's sleep. Common sleeping problems (such as insomnia) are often caused by bad habits reinforced over years. You can learn to retrain your body and mind so that you sleep well and wake feeling rested.

Obey your body clock

The body’s alternating sleep–wake cycle is controlled by an internal ‘clock’ within the brain. Most bodily processes (such as temperature and brain states) are synchronised to this 24-hour physiological clock. Getting a good sleep means working with your body clock, not against it. Suggestions include:

  • Get up at the same time every day. Soon this strict routine will help to ‘set’ your body clock and you’ll find yourself getting sleepy at about the same time every night.
  • Don’t ignore tiredness. Go to bed when your body tells you it’s ready.
  • Don’t go to bed if you don’t feel tired. You will only reinforce bad habits such as lying awake.
  • Get enough sunshine. Exposure to light during waking hours helps to set your body clock.

  • My GP kept telling me that "Exercise"and only "Exercise'' would help me gain control of my health and weight, and so it was that I decided to join a gym. Genesis, the gym being the closest, I went over to enroll my self as a member and couldn't have made a better choice.
I had joined this gym earlier but left due to being lazy and unmotivated, I therefore decided to exercise under the guidance of a P.T. I was referred to Caleb Vardy-Olsson, one of the many professional P.T.'s at Genesis, tough but understanding of my medical situation, I started my training. Being a person who would usually give up after a certain period of time,it was Caleb who with the understanding of my health issues kept motivating and pushing me into coming regularly to the gym and working out, which I still do since I joined about seven months ago.
I visit the Gym three times a week, and under Calebs professional guidance and training I have succeeded in losing a significant amount of weight, which is an achievement that I did not think I could reach in such a short time. My views on my health and diet have also changed for good and I am glad to have made the decision to join Genesis and train with Caleb".
